[ September 25, 2026 ] During a Special Called Joint Meeting between the City of Jasper and Pickens County on September 24, 2026, discussions surrounding the Service Delivery Strategy (SDS) took an unexpected turn when Pickens County Chairman Kris Stancil announced that the county is exploring a consolidated city-county government structure.

While recapping the challenges brought on by the area's explosive growth and straining water infrastructure, Stancil stated that the county has engaged engineering and legal firms to begin researching the potential of unification. The goal of this exploration is to determine if consolidating the two governments could eliminate the red tape, duplication of services, and confusion over jurisdictional responsibilities that currently frustrate both city and county residents.

Mayor Kirk Raffield and the Jasper City Council noted they were previously unaware of these discussions with the state delegation but acknowledged that the conversation will undoubtedly continue.

In addition to the consolidation announcement, the two boards made progress on several SDS items. They are nearing an agreement to unify animal control ordinances and share costs.

Furthermore, leaders agreed to bring together Fire Chiefs, 911 Dispatch, and Administration to streamline fire protection territories and mutual aid agreements.

On the complex issue of water delivery, the county requested map corrections to serve residents near existing county lines in Areas 6 and 7, while the city agreed to draft a cost formula to value water infrastructure for potential future acquisitions, starting with Area 2.
