The Pickens Report - June 2020

[ July 18, 2020 ] The conclusion of another month of activities across Pickens County can be easily summarized: busy and hot! We have reached the midway point for the calendar year and many projects are in the works.

The SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) collections for 2019 and 2020 have increased by roughly twelve percent compared to 2018 collections. SPLOST collections have totaled $2,301,490 from January to the end of May. The total SPLOST collections from July 1, 2014 to June 2020 is $27,887,930. SPLOST funds are used for capital outlay projects such as: road, street and bridge projects, public safety, and water and sewer facilities.

During the month of June:

▸ The 911 Operations Center received 2,115 total calls, 808 were medical responses or fire related.

▸ The Department of Planning and Development issued 58 new building permits.

▸ The Pickens Animal Shelter brought in 55 new animals, and 39 went out through various forms of adoption. Animal Control responded to four cases.

▸ The Water Department installed 15 new meters. The 2019 Annual Water Quality Report is complete, the report can be viewed here or a copy can be picked up at the Water Office.

▸ Public Works is continuing to prep roads and replace pipes for the upcoming paving season as well as performing routine maintenance.

▸ The Recreation Department is still offering Summer Camp until July 31st and the county pool will remain open until August 2nd.
