3-2 Vote Dismisses Superintendent Dr. Townsend

[ February 23, 2021 ] Pickens Board of Education held a called meeting on Tuesday, February 23 with the only agenda item the Superintendent Contract. The Board voted 3-2 to dismiss Dr. Rick Townsend's Superintendent contract without cause. (Tucker Green and Tommy Gartrell voted against the motion.) The video was live streamed by the BOE but now no longer available. Below is a press release following the meeting:

Dr. Rick Townsend and the Pickens County Board of Education have agreed to part ways amicably. Dr. Townsend was dismissed without cause to enable the Board to chart a new direction for the School District. The Board wishes Dr. Townsend and his family the best and thank him for his leadership and commitment to the community.

Dr. Townsend would like to thank the staff and community for their support during these unique times and hopes the students continue to grow socially, emotionally, and academically in years to come.


Total liability of $421,699.50 for two years of salary
