Flag Day Ceremony on June 14th

[ June 06, 2023 ] We just honored our Veterans on Memorial Day holiday now it is time to honor our America Flag. Flag Day, which takes place annually on June 14, is an oft-forgotten holiday, once called the "runty stepchild among American national holidays" in the New York Times.

This year's celebration of the holiday might go unnoticed, but its history is layered with politics and patriotism---and it's probably not what you'd expect.

The meaning of the American Flag was a lot different from when the original banner was designed in 1776. Despite all the symbolism it has acquired over the years, the flag wasn't created to be a symbol of patriotism.

So how do we celebrate Flag Day on June 14? You are invited to the Pickens County Veterans Memorial Park at 11 am for a Flag Day ceremony. The ceremony will include a retired American Flag ceremony that will be hosted by the Sons of the American Legion.
