[ July 08, 2024 ] On June 21-23, 2024, twelve Pickens County 4-H youth attended State 4-H Council at Rock Eagle 4-H Center (Eatonton, Georgia). Georgia 4-H's State Council is a weekend workshop dedicated to helping high school students hone their leadership skills. With the theme of State Council being 4-H: A Route to Your Destiny, youth participated in workshops, seminars, and hands-on activities that help youth gain experience in leadership, citizenship, and personal development.

At this year's session, 4-H'ers engaged in a wide range of activities designed to foster leadership qualities and civic responsibility. From workshops on public speaking and team-building exercises to community service projects, the agenda was packed with opportunities for growth and learning.

One of the highlights of the event was the election of new State 4-H officers who will guide the group in the upcoming year. These young leaders, elected by their peers, exemplify the dedication and passion that define Georgia 4-H. Their roles involved leading 4-H members and representing Georgia 4-H at various state events.

While at State Council, Pickens County 4-H was well represented. Many students participated in their project achievement competitions at a state level, led community service activities, showcased their interests with a mini-booth, and participated in the Key Awards process.

Micah Newton and Isabelle Gill competed in their project achievement competition areas at the state level. Micah participated in the Performing Arts- Other Instrumental project where he performed a musical piece on his trombone, and Isabelle competed in the Food Fare project where she prepared her cooked meal, "Bulldog Bites". The outcome of their competitions will be announced at the State 4-H Congress on July 24th.

Four Pickens County 4-H'ers applied for the Key Award. This award demonstrates consistent growth in their 4-H involvement. Ryan Johnson was awarded Level II and Micah Newton, Reese Davis, and Molly Hooker were awarded Level I.

Five students created an exhibit based on their interest to share their researched-based knowledge with 4-H peers from across the state. The students include Sarahi Flores - "Nutrition for the Athlete", Sheila Flores - "Finance", Micah Newton - "Music Effects on Your Brain", Sky Paredes - "International", and Sophia Scott - "Butterfly vs. Moth".

Lastly, Micah Newton prepared and facilitated a community service project where his 4-H peers painted pictures for local senior citizens. We are very proud of all their hard work!

Throughout its history, Georgia 4-H State Council has been instrumental in shaping the lives of students, equipping them with the skills and confidence in an ever-changing world. By emphasizing service, leadership, and personal growth, State Council prepares 4-H'ers to become responsible citizens and effective leaders in their communities.
