New Sewer & Water Connections Temporary Suspension

[ September 10, 2024 ] At the September 9, 2024, Jasper City Council meeting, Resolution 2024-16 was passed by the City Council, and which on a temporary basis, suspends new water and sewer connections to the City's distribution and collection systems for water and sewer for a maximum temporary period until September 8, 2025.

In light of the City's partnership with Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood (GMC) on Utilities and Development Master Planning and the ongoing assessments of the City utility systems and available treatment capacities, City Council and Staff believe the temporary suspension to be necessary to allow for some of the most critically prioritized rehabilitative and improvement work to be performed through the recently funded GEFA utility projects, as well as to secure additional raw water sources.

During this interim period, the City will continue to pursue additional sources of water through our partnerships with our neighboring communities and through the exploration of new groundwater sources and other innovative possibilities.

Recognizing that there are a few projects underway that have possible acknowledged capacity requests and commitments, there will be situations where a few connections will continue to be allowed on a case-by-case basis.

Mayor Kirk D. Raffield stated "The City of Jasper is committed to supporting healthy growth within our community. We do have a responsibility to be good stewards of our resources and ensuring safe and reliable utility service to our existing customers. With the passage of Resolution 2024-16 at last night's Council meeting, we're in a time where new development requests will put on hold to ensure the City effectively manages our resources and is able to continue service to our Community."

With Pickens County as the only county within the State of Georgia that does not have a major waterbody, the City asks that all customers be supportive of conservation efforts regarding our most precious resource, water. The City would appreciate everyone on the City's water system to limit as much as possible any outdoor watering [and any possible indoor conservation], and if you must water, then to do so every other day after 10:00pm. The City appreciates everyone's willingness to help the Community and to conserve water.
