[ January 09, 2025 ] During the first council meeting of 2025, Mayor James Bryant expressed excitement for the year ahead and appreciation for the progress made in 2024. He announced a $1,000 donation to Save the Horses from proceeds of the 2024 Bronco Stampede. New Council member Darlene O'Connell was welcomed and will receive training in Athens by spring.
The council approved the creation of a special projects account with $150,000 and increased the Schoolhouse Museum account by $50,000. Funds from the American Rescue Plan were used to improve the Town Hall's ADA compliance (photo above).
The Town Clerk, Amanda Buntin, was praised for her budget management by Mayor Bryant. The maintenance report from Jerry Wright highlighted the need to repair the restrooms for local businesses. Mayor Bryant emphasized the importance of prioritizing special projects, including a $26,000 study for pedestrian crossings, and is seeking additional funding for this initiative.
Additionally, Mayor Bryant discussed the need for asphalt installation and road improvements within the town. Council member Jason Little has been tasked with identifying areas for estimates, which will be presented to the council and citizens. Special events for the year include the Easter event, the Bronco Stampede, and Heritage Days in October. The council is committed to improving infrastructure to enhance the town's appeal and support local businesses.
The council also approved the use of a temporary storage unit for town decorations until the new fire station is complete. The storage unit costs $120 per month and can be canceled with 30 days' notice. Lastly, the council voted to raise the qualifying fee for council elections from $1 to $2.
